It might be worth posting the full solution as I have found others through the internet that have had similar problems with Bluetooth Adapters and even USB dongles on other computers. I thought that I would let you know I HAVE CRACKED THIS ONE! It only took about five days of fooling around and tearing my hair out. So it seems if I am nearly there but any ideas on where to go from here? Same goes for the sync software – it doesn’t find the phone either. If I click on that (or run bthprops.cpl) I get the bluetooth devices options but not surprisingly., when I run add device, it does not find my phone. There is a bluetooth icon in the system tray. I checked properties but nothing useful there except that the driver is the Aug 2004 one from MS. This installed using MS drivers (hooray) but then showed up in Device manager with the old yellow ! mark and the dialogue “This device failed to start”. I drilled down, found, and forced an install of Toshiba’s Bluetooth network adapter. I ran Add Hardware but, again, no new devices. I then rebooted in normal mode but XP did not detect any bluetooth radios/devices. Device manager won’t allow an uninstall of this anyway as it is “required for boot up”. The only mention of bluetooth was Toshiba’s Bluetooth Personal Area Net Packet Scheduler Miniport (shown under network adapters). I looked in device manager but could not find any other obvious Toshiba (or indeed any other) bluetooth drivers. I uninstalled the Toshiba Bluetooth stack to get rid of the most obvious third party drivers, then rebooted in Safe mode. Well, I have gone through your suggestions with mixed results.
